Tamil Nadu Day
- July 18 (State Renaming Day) is observed as “Tamil Nadu Day” to commemorate the historic decision taken in 1967 to rename the then Madras State as Tamil Nadu. In 2021, the Tamil Nadu government announced that the official celebration of Tamil Nadu Day would be shifted to July 18, replacing the earlier observance on November 1.
- On 18 July 1967, then Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai moved a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu. The resolution received unanimous support from the members of the Assembly.
- The change was later approved by the Parliament through the Madras State (Alteration of Name) Act, 1968, and the new name officially came into effect on 14 January 1969.
