Births Decline and Deaths Slightly Rise in India
According to the Vital Statistics of India 2023, based on the Civil Registration System, 86.6 lakh deaths were registered in 2023.
This is a slight increase over the 86.5 lakh deaths registered in 2022.
Decline in Births
In 2023, 2.52 crore births were registered in India, which is approximately 2.32 lakh fewer than in 2022.
Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB)
SRB is defined as the number of female births per 1,000 male births.

Overall, while the birth rate in India slightly declined in 2023, the death rate increased only
marginally.
At the same time, significant variations in the sex ratio at birth are observed across different
states.
