Vice Presidential Election: Electoral Roll Finalized by Election Commission
Election Procedure
▪ The election is conducted under Article 66(1) of the Constitution using the Proportional Representation System by means of a single transferable vote through secret ballot.
▪ The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college comprising the elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, as well as the elected members of the Lok Sabha.
▪ Article 324 – The Election Commission is mandated to conduct the election to the office of the Vice-President of India.
▪ As per Article 68(2) of the Constitution, in the event of death, resignation, or removal of the Vice President before the completion of the 5-year term, the vacancy must be filled as soon as possible through an election.
▪ The Vice Presidential election must be completed within 30 days from the date of official notification.
Eligibility Criteria to Contest
▪ Must be an Indian citizen.
▪ Must be at least 35 years of age.
▪ Must be eligible for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Tenure
▪ The newly elected Vice President will serve a 5-year term.
▪ Even after the term ends, the Vice President can continue in office until the next Vice President is elected, as permitted by the Constitution.
