LS clears Bill to include Narikoravan, Kurivikkaran tribes in ST list of Tamil Nadu

- The Lok Sabha passed the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022, to include the Narikoravan and Kuruvikaran tribes of Tamil Nadu in the Scheduled Tribes list of the State.
- Tamil Nadu’s population is over seven crore and the two communities constitute just about 27,000 of the population.
- On the basis of the recommendation of Tamil Nadu and after consultation with the Registrar General of India and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, it is proposed to amend Part XIV of the Schedule to the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.
- Once the Bill is approved by Parliament and the rules are framed, the members of Narikoravar and Kurivikkarar communities will be entitled to all benefits which are provided to those belonging to the ST category, especially reservation in educational institutions and government jobs.

- Article 342 deals with the provisions related to Scheduled Tribes.
- It states that the President after consultation with the Governor by public notification may specify a particular tribe deemed to be deemed as scheduled tribe.
