Govt acquires 3 Lakh Tonne of Onion

- Union Consumer Affairs Secretary announced that the government has procured three lakh tonne of onions, a 20% increase from last year’s buffer stock.
- They are also testing the use of irradiation with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to prolong the shelf life of onions.
- The buffer stock, maintained under the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF), aims to address any potential shortage and price fluctuations during lean supply seasons.
- The Consumer Affairs Ministry, in collaboration with the Department of Atomic Energy and BARC, is piloting onion irradiation using gamma radiation from Cobalt-60 at Lasalgaon in Maharashtra to extend the onions’ shelf life.
