Government unveils Green hydrogen standards
- In a significant move for the progress of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the government has notified the Green Hydrogen Standard for India.
Key Highlights
- The standards outline the emission thresholds to be met for hydrogen produced to be classified as ‘Green’, i.e., from renewable sources.
- The scope of the definition of ‘Green Hydrogen’ includes both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production methods.
- Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power shall be the Nodal Authority for accreditation of agencies for the monitoring, verification and certification for Green Hydrogen production projects.

- Types of Hydrogen based on extraction Methods
- Grey Hydrogen: It is produced via coal or lignite gasification, natural gas or methane.
- Blue Hydrogen: It is produced via natural gas or coal gasification combined with carbon capture storage (CCS) or carbon capture use (CCU) technologies .
- Green Hydrogen: It is produced using electrolysis of water with electricity generated by renewable energy.
