Carbon Dioxide Levels Reach a New High – UN Report
According to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere reached a record high in 2024.
The 2024 level was the highest ever recorded since measurements began in 1957.
The UN stated that greenhouse gases trapped more of the sun’s heat, intensifying global warming and leading to frequent natural disasters.
The UN emphasized that reducing carbon emissions is essential not only for climate stability but also for economic security and social welfare.
In addition to CO₂, other greenhouse gases like methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) also reached record levels in 2024.
World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
Established in 1950, the WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to
meteorology, climatology, hydrology, and related geophysical sciences.
Its mission is to promote cooperation in the exchange of weather, climate, and environmental information and technologies among member states.
The organization currently has 193 member countries.
Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.
