European Bats
Europe’s Greater Noctule bats are capable of hunting and eating small migratory birds while
flying.
Previously, it was believed that bats could not perform this behavior.
Bats have been observed hunting birds at altitudes above 400 meters.
In one instance, a bat captured a European Robin and consumed it continuously while flying for 20 minutes.
These bats use ultrasonic echolocation, which produces sound frequencies inaudible to birds.
Additionally, their powerful wingbeats allow them to fly faster than birds, helping them overtake and catch their prey.
