Salar de Pajonales

  • Context: Researchers are studying gypsum deposits in the mineral Salar de Pajonales, found on Earth and Mars.

About gypsum

    • Gypsum is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO·2HO) and anhydrite (CaSO).
  • It usually forms in large basins with evaporate minerals such as anhydrite and halite.
  • In India, marine gypsum is extracted from salt pans during salt production, mainly in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
