Indian Government Proposed Isobutanol Blending in Diesel

    • Context: The Government of India is likely to introduce a mandate for blending isobutanol with diesel by the end of 2026.
  • The initiative is being considered by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Objective

  • Enhance India’s energy security.
  • Reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
  • Support decarbonisation of the transport sector.

About Isobutanol

    • Isobutanol (isobutyl alcohol) is a type of alcohol that can be produced from plant-based sources.
  • It is used in: Biofuels, Pharmaceuticals, Fragrances and flavours, Paints, lacquers, and chemical manufacturing

Significance of Diesel Blending

    • Diesel consumption in India is nearly twice that of petrol.
  • Blending biofuels with diesel can have a greater impact on: Fuel import reduction, Energy security, Carbon emission reduction

Ethanol Blending Programme

  • India has increased ethanol blending in petrol from 1% to nearly 20% (E20) over the last decade.
    • The programme has reduced crude oil imports significantly.
  • E20 refers to 20% ethanol blended with petrol.

Higher Ethanol Fuel Initiatives

    • Draft notifications have been issued for:
  • E85 fuel (85% ethanol + 15% petrol)
  • E100 fuel (nearly pure ethanol)
  • Separate fuel dispensers are proposed for these fuels.
