Chennai Suburban Rail Service – A 95-Year Journey
- With this year, the Chennai Suburban Rail Service marks the completion of 95 years since its inception. Chennai’s journey in suburban rail transportation began in the year 1931.
- Suburban electric train services were introduced along a stretch of approximately 29 kilometers between Chennai Beach and Tambaram.
- Through this initiative, Chennai earned the distinction of becoming the first city in South India to feature an electric suburban rail service.
- In its initial phase, services were characterized by a limited number of trains and extremely low fares—priced in ‘Annas‘—making them highly affordable.
- The ‘Flying Train’ Service: Another significant milestone in Chennai’s urban rail transportation history is the ‘Flying Train’ (MRTS) project. The first elevated rail corridor, connecting Chennai Beach and Chepauk, was inaugurated in 1995.
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTPAA) 1971
- MTP,1971, legalises abortion in India up to 20 weeks of pregnancy when provided by a registered medical practitioner (RMP) at a registered medical facility.
- The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTPAA) 2021 amended the MTP Act 1971 to increase the upper gestation limit for termination of pregnancy under certain conditions.
- Features of MTPAA, 2021
- A pregnancy may be terminated up to 20 weeks by a married woman in the case of failure of a contraceptive method or device
- It allows unmarried women to also terminate a pregnancy for this reason
- The Act Increases the upper gestation limit from 20 to 24 weeks for special categories of women.
- The Medical Board will decide if a pregnancy may be terminated after 24 weeks due to substantial foetal abnormalities.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation
- The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is a state-government Public Sector Undertaking of the Government of Tamil Nadu located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
- It is managed by the Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department and was established in July 1971.
- It is the nodal agency responsible for the promotion of tourism and development of tourist related infrastructure in the state.
