Govt acquires 3 Lakh Tonne of Onion Union Consumer Affairs Secretary announced that the government has procured three lakh tonne of onions, a 20% increase from last year's buffer stock. They are also testing the use of irradiation with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to prolong the shelf life of onions. The buffer stock, maintained under the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF), aims to address any potential shortage and price fluctuations during lean supply seasons. The Consumer Affairs Ministry, in collaboration with the Department of Atomic Energy and BARC, is piloting onion irradiation using gamma radiation from Cobalt-60 at Lasalgaon in Maharashtra to extend the onions' shelf life.
