Public Opinion and General Awareness Number of death penalty crimes increased A parliamentary panel report states that the proposed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023, has increased the number of crimes which can attract the death penalty from 11 to 15. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023 was introduced in the Lok Sabha and if passed it would replace the British era Indian Penal Code (IPC). Public Awareness & General Administration More immunity to defence personnel A report published by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs states that the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023 will provide further immunity to armed forces personnel as no case can be registered against them without the sanction of the Union or the State government for acts performed in the line of duty. The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023 if passed is expected to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The CrPC was introduced in 1898 and amended in 1973.
