Kanchipuram
▪ Known as the Temple City.
▪ Tamil Nadu has the highest number of handloom weaver cooperative societies in India.
▪ The original silk sarees produced in Kanchipuram are known for their heavier weight across three leaves (layers) and the incorporation of various technical weaving methods.
▪ This saree has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Tamil Kanavu Initiative
▪ A cultural outreach event titled Tamil Kanavu was conducted in Chennai with participation from students of 10 colleges, aimed at creating awareness about Tamil heritage.
▪ The Tamil Kanavu campaign was launched in 2023 by the Tamil Virtual Academy and Higher Education Department, on the occasion of former Chief Minister Anna’s memorial day.
▪ It aims to benefit 2 lakh students from 200 colleges across Tamil Nadu.
Waste-to-Energy Projects in Tamil Nadu
▪ Under the waste-to-energy initiative, power is being generated from garbage using:
✓ Boilers and gas engines
✓ Bio-CNG: Purified biogas/natural gas for transport fuel use
✓ Biomass gasifier: For thermal and power applications
Blue Flag project
▪ Three new beaches to be developed under the Blue Flag certification programme: Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam and Uthandi.
▪ Funding:
✓ ₹6.02 crore per beach.
✓ Funded by Tamil Nadu: Strengthening Coastal Resilience and the Economy Project, supported by
the World Bank.
The Blue Flag initiative
▪ It is a globally recognized eco-label accorded by the Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark (FEE).
▪ The Blue Flag programme was started in France in 1985 and in areas out of Europe in 2001.
▪ Marina is the latest addition to Tamil Nadu’s list of beaches being upgraded for Blue Flag recognition, following the certification of Kovalam beach in Chengalpattu.
▪ The other Indian beaches in the blue list are Shivrajpur-Gujarat, Ghoghla-Diu, Kasarkod and
Padubidri-Karnataka, Kappad-Kerala, Rushikonda- Andhra Pradesh, Golden-Odisha, RadhanagarAndaman and Nicobar, Kovalam in Tamil Nadu and Eden in Puducherry beaches, Minicoy Thundi Beach – Lakshadweep and Kadmat Beach- Lakshadweep.
