Chief Minister’s Thayumanavar Scheme
▪ Families with senior citizens above the age of 70 and persons with disabilities will be provided
essential commodities at their doorstep, will be launched on August 12 in Chennai.
▪ Monthly delivery on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month.
▪ This scheme not only improves the livelihood of the underprivileged sections but also ensures their food security.
▪ The data for this scheme have been collected from the Department of Food and Consumer Protection, and given to ground-level officials in the rank of Sub-Registrar.
▪ A total of 21,70,454 beneficiaries attached to 16,73,333 family cards under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
▪ The scheme specifically targets ration cards where all members are above 70 years of age with no member of 18, and cards where all members are disabled or only one member is disabled, with no other adult member aged 18 or above.
Kalaignar Student Journalists Scheme and Kalaignar Financial Aid Scheme for Scholars
▪ Launched on 07, August 2025 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in Chennai
▪ To mark the 7th death anniversary of former Chief Minister Kalaignar M Karunanidhi.
▪ Aims to train youth in journalism.
▪ Youngsters will be trained through Murasoli and Kalaignar Television channel.
▪ Each year, 15 scholars will be selected and awarded Rs 1 lakh each in installments.
▪ The selected works will be published as books through Muthamizh Arignar publications.
Thanjavur’s Sarasvati Mahal Library
▪ The Tamil Nadu State government has officially declared Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Sarasvati Mahal Library a library of historical and cultural importance.
▪ It is now classified as an aided library under the Tamil Nadu Public Libraries Rules, 1950.
▪ Grants to Sarasvati Mahal Library will fund research, publications, manuscript conservation and digitisation, upkeep, and administration, according to a notification by the School Education Department.
Historical Background
▪ Located inside the Thanjavur Palace.
▪ One of the oldest libraries in Asia and among the greatest Oriental manuscript libraries in the world.
▪ Collection began in the 16th century under the Nayak rulers of Thanjavur (1535–1675 CE).
▪ Greatly expanded by the Maratha dynasty, especially by Raja Serfoji II (1798–1832), a noted
bibliophile.
Tamil Nadu setting up a desk for Global Capability Centres (GCCs)
▪ Tamil Nadu will establish a dedicated desk to fast-track clearances for research and developmentfocused Global Capability Centres (GCCs).
▪ The move aims to attract multinational firms looking to expand or relocate their GCCs to Tamil Nadu.
▪ Industries Minister Dr. TRB Rajaa announced this at the GCC Next Summit 2025 in Chennai.
▪ The initiative is part of building a thriving R&D ecosystem in Chennai.
▪ The GCC Next Summit 2025, themed “Future-Ready GCCs: How AI is Reshaping Global Capability Centers,” gathered over 900 senior executives.
Free Bus Travel in Tamil Nadu
▪ In Tamil Nadu, this scheme came into effect in 2021.
▪ In ordinary local buses running within a 30 km radius, women, transgender persons, and persons with disabilities can make use of this facility.
▪ Through this, it becomes easier for women to go shopping and to work.
▪ Their socio-economic status also improves.
▪ According to government data, every day, 57 lakh women travel across the state, and through this, each person is able to save Rs.888 per month.
