Tamil Nadu: From Wind Energy Pioneer to Solar Energy Powerhouse
Tamil Nadu’s Pioneering Status in Renewable Energy
-
- Tamil Nadu has stood as one of India’s leading states in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the field of wind energy.
- The state established a robust wind energy ecosystem and emerged as a central hub for India’s wind energy sector.
- Although Gujarat subsequently surpassed Tamil Nadu in terms of installed wind energy capacity, Tamil Nadu continues to play a pivotal role in India’s renewable energy landscape.
Efforts to Reclaim Leadership in the Wind Energy Sector
- Repowering (upgrading) older wind turbines to enhance efficiency.
- Improving power transmission and distribution infrastructure.
- Attracting new investments into the renewable energy sector.
- It is estimated that wind turbines nearing the end of their operational lifespan with a combined capacity ranging from approximately 2,500 MW to 3,000 MW are suitable for repowering; this initiative will significantly boost power generation capacity.
Installed Renewable Energy Capacity (April 2026)
-
- Solar Energy Capacity: 13,871 MW
- Wind Energy Capacity: 12,159 MW
- In terms of installed power generation capacity within Tamil Nadu, solar energy has now surpassed wind energy to take the lead.
Rapid Growth of Solar Energy
-
- Tamil Nadu’s solar energy generation capacity has risen from 5,067 MW in March 2022 to 13,871 MW in April 2026.
- The state achieved the milestone of 10 GW in solar energy generation capacity in March 2025.
Tamil Nadu’s National Standing in the Solar Energy Sector
- Based on installed solar energy capacity, Tamil Nadu currently ranks fourth at the national level.
- The states leading Tamil Nadu are as follows: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra
Factors Driving Solar Energy Expansion
Supportive ‘Open Access’ Policies
- Tamil Nadu’s favorable ‘Open Access’ policy framework has encouraged investments in renewable energy and facilitated the procurement of electricity.
Industrial Demand for Green Energy
- To achieve sustainability and green energy-related targets, industries and corporations are increasingly adopting renewable energy on a large scale.
Transition from Wind Energy Dominance to a Solar Energy Hub
- Tamil Nadu was once known primarily for its wind energy sector.
- While continuing to strengthen its wind energy sector through modernization and restructuring efforts, the state is now emerging as one of India’s leading hubs for solar energy.
Economy
Tamil Nadu: One of the Leading States in Income Growth since 2003-04
-
- Context: According to a recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report, Tamil Nadu’s per capita Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has grown significantly since 2003-04.
- When calculated at constant prices (adjusted for inflation), the state’s per capita GSDP in 2024-25 stands at 4.2 times the level recorded in 2003-04.
- This 4.2-fold real growth in Tamil Nadu’s per capita income is significantly higher than the national average growth of 3.3 times.
- Based on current US dollar values, Tamil Nadu’s per capita income is 6.6 times higher than in 2003-04; securing the fourth position nationally, the state trails Karnataka by only a very narrow margin.
