New Space Infrastructure in Thoothukudi: CTF and Industrial Park

    • Context: Tamil Nadu is set to establish a new Common Technology Facility (CTF) for space vehicles in Thoothukudi, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s aerospace ecosystem.
  • The agreement for the facility was signed between the State Industries Department and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).

Common Technology Facility (CTF)

    • Provides advanced testing services such as vibration and shock testing
  • Supports thermal-vacuum testing
  • Handles electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC) testing
  • Offers pressure and flow testing facilities
  • Includes support for propulsion systems
  • Enables launch vehicle assembly and component integration
  • Acts as a key support system for space-related activities
  • Allows space companies across India to use high-quality testing infrastructure

Space Industrial Park

    • Being developed near the upcoming launch site at Kulasekarapattinam .
    • Will function as a manufacturing centre for space-related components.
  • Aims to strengthen India’s space manufacturing ecosystem
  • Focus areas include: Launch vehicle parts, Satellite systems, Propulsion systems, Aerospace electronics, Advanced composite materials.

About IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre)

  • It is an independent organization functioning under the Department of Space (DoS).
  • It was set up after the Space Sector Reforms of 2020 to encourage private sector involvement and boost India’s space economy through cooperation between government and private players.

Main Functions:

  • Promotion: Supports the growth of the private space sector by offering funding opportunities and transferring technology from ISRO.
  • Facilitation: Helps reduce costs for startups by giving them access to ISRO’s facilities, infrastructure, and laboratories.
  • Authorization: Acts as the main regulatory body responsible for approving private space launches and related ground activities.
