Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) in Tamil Nadu
- Background: To strengthen the state’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the Government of India has approved the establishment of two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) in Tamil Nadu, with a total outlay of ₹1,012 crore.
- These clusters will be located at: Manalur in Thiruvallur district (474.3 acres) and Pillaippakkam in Kancheepuram district (379.3 acres).
About Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs)
- The Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme is an initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to create world-class infrastructure for the electronics manufacturing sector.
- The scheme aims to develop dedicated industrial clusters equipped with ‘plug-and-play’ facilities, common infrastructure, logistics support, testing laboratories, and research facilities, enabling manufacturers to set up production units efficiently.
- The scheme provides financial assistance to upgrade common infrastructure; this results in reduced manufacturing costs, enhanced competitiveness, and the promotion of both domestic and foreign investments.
- This initiative is expected to attract large-scale investments, boost domestic electronics manufacturing, create employment opportunities, and position Tamil Nadu as a leading electronics and semiconductor hub in India.
- This development reinforces the ‘Semicon India’ initiative; under this program, 61 companies from Tamil Nadu have been selected for semiconductor capacity building out of 315 companies nationwide.
- It also aligns with the ‘Semicon India 2.0’ scheme (approved on July 15, 2026), which aims to create a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem across the country.
