India moves towards tuberculosis eradication

  • India has become the first country in the world to estimate the tuberculosis (TB) burden in country and launch its own mathematical system to estimate the disease    burden.
  • global estimates drawn up each year by the World Health Organization.
  • India’s TN TB incidence rate stands at 172 per 1,00,000 population, instead of the 210 estimated by the WHO.
  • TB incidence rate of Tamil Nadu stands at 121 per 1,00,000 population.
  • India has the highest number of tuberculosis cases in the world. India alone accounts for 28 per cent of the global TB cases.
  • Globally, about 1.6 million people die every year due to tuberculosis. India is also the leading cause of tuberculosis deaths.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has set a target of eradicating tuberculosis internationally by 2030. At the same time, India has set a target to eradicate TB completely (TB Free India) by 2025.

Govt. circumspect over plan to introduce Gir lions in Kuno National park.

  • About Gir National Park:
  • The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat.
  • The Gir Forests is the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions (IUCN Red List: Endangered)
  • The Gir Forests is the largest compact tract of dry deciduous forests in the semi-arid western part of India.

India to host meeting of security advisers from SCO countries.

  • India will host a meeting of the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

    • SCO is a permanent intergovernmental international organization.
    • It was created in 2001.
    • It’s a Eurasian political, economic and military organization aiming to maintain peace, security and stability in the region.
  • India host the SCO summit in 2023.
  • Member nations: Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan.
  • Head Quarters: Beijing, China.
