Important Days 

National Nutrition Week (Bharat Nutrition week)

  • National Nutrition Week is observed every year from September 1 to September 7. 
  • Objective – To raise awareness about the importance of nutrition for the human body and measures to eradicate hunger and malnourishment. 
  • Theme 2023 – “Healthy Diet Going Affordable for All”.

Note

  • The Indian government has been conducting the National Nutrition week since 1982.

Defence

INS Mahendragiri

  • INS Mahendragiri was commissioned by Sudesh Dhankher (Second Lady of India) at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai.
  • Mahendragiri is Indian Navy’s final and 7th stealth frigate constructed as part of Project 17A frigates. 
  • It is named after a mountain peak in the eastern Ghats located in Odisha.

About Project 17 Alpha

  • Launch – 2019 
  • To construct a series of stealth guided-missile frigates (total 7 ships). 
  • Constructed by two companies 
  • Four ships by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Mumbai. 
  • Three ships by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

Awards and Honours
65th Ramon Magsaysay Award 2023

  • Surgical oncologist R. Ravi Kannan, Director of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in Assam was selected as one of the Ramon Magsaysay award for 2023.
  • He is credited with revolutionising cancer treatment in Assam through people centric and pro poor healthcare.

    • Creation – August 31, 1957
  • To commemorate the birth anniversary of the Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay. 
  • Conceived as Asia’s Nobel Prize to honour greatness of spirit shown in service to the peoples of Asia.

Note

  • The first Indian to win the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Vinoba Bhave in 1958 under the category of Community Leadership.
    Appointments 

First woman to head Railway Board

  • Jaya Verma Sinha was appointed as the Chairperson of the Railway Board, the top decision­making body of the Railway Ministry. 
  • She replaces Anil Kumar Lahoti.
  • She becomes the first woman to head the Board in its 118­year history (Since 1905). 

History of Railway Board 

  • Constituted in 1901 based on the recommendations of Sir Thomas Robertson Committee.
  • In 1905, its powers were formalised by Lord Curzon’s government.
