All-woman sailing expedition flagged off Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi flagged off an all-woman sailing expedition organised by the Tamil Nadu Police as part of the “Golden Jubilee Year of Women in Tamil Nadu Police Force” celebrations. The expedition plans to cover a distance of 1,000 km on the Chennai-Pulicat-Point Calimere-Chennai route and has been scheduled. For this, 25 women police personnel were selected and imparted with basic and advance training. Background In 1973, The First Batch of Women in Tamil Nadu Police, consisting of an SI (Usharani), an HC and 20 PCs was recruited in the State by then CM M Karunanidhi. In 1976, Letika Saran and G Thilakavathi became the First Women IPS officers of the TN cadre. In 1992, first All Women Police Station (AWPS) in the State was opened by the then CM J Jayalalitha in the Thousand Lights area of the city. Note Kiran Bedi became the First Woman in India to join the officer ranks of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972. India's First All Women Police Station located in Kozhikode, Kerala which was inaugurated by the then PM Indira Gandhi in 1973.
