NGT Penalty ▪ The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal has directed Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) to pay ₹5 crore as compensation for the oil spill in Pattinamacherry, off Nagapattinam coast, in March 2023. ▪ The leak occurred in CPCL’s Cauvery Basin Refinery at Nagapattinam. ▪ As per Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) 10,000 litres of oil had leaked, whereas only 9,000 litres were removed or recovered. About NGT ▪ Statutory body under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010. ▪ Objective - For effective and expeditious disposal of cases related to environmental protection. ▪ Principal Place of Sitting of the Tribunal – New Delhi. T.N.’s rice yield ▪ Tamil Nadu’s yield of rice, during 2023-24 for both the cultivation seasons of kharif and rabi, is lower than that of the national average. ▪ The yield for the year 2023-24 is 2.31 tonnes per hectare in Tamil Nadu whereas the all-India average is 2.74 tonnes per hectare. ▪ In terms of yield, Tamil Nadu trailed behind two States known for rice production — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
