22nd ASEAN Summit
- Prime Minister, while addressing the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit virtually, declared that “the 21st century is our century — the century of India and ASEAN.”
- On that basis, the year 2026 has been declared as the Year for the Promotion of ASEAN-India Maritime Cooperation.
- The two sides are focused on implementing the ASEAN-India Plan of Action 2026-2030 to strengthen cooperation in: Trade, Investment, Education, Food Security and Technological Development.
- The summit was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
About the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
- It was established in 1967 in Bangkok (Thailand) with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
- Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand are the founding members of ASEAN.
- It has ten member countries. Other members are Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Brunei.
- India is not a member of ASEAN.
Act East policy
- It was announced by PM Modi in 2014.
- It is a successor to the Look East policy.
- The objective is to promote economic cooperation and cultural ties and develop strategic relationships with countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
