What is leptospirosis?

  • Leptospirosis is caused by a type of bacteria called Leptospira.
  • It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can infect humans from animals.
  • The bacteria that cause leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can survive in soil or water for weeks to months.

Types of Leptospirosis

  • Anicteric Syndrome
  • Anicteric syndrome is the initial stage of leptospirosis.
  • Icteric Syndrome
  • If people recover and then get sick again, they may enter the second stage of leptospirosis.
  • This form is called icteric syndrome or Weil’s disease.
