Leptospirosis is caused by a type of bacteria called Leptospira. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can infect humans from animals. The bacteria that cause leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can survive in soil or water for weeks to months. Types of Leptospirosis Anicteric Syndrome Anicteric syndrome is the initial stage of leptospirosis. Icteric Syndrome If people recover and then get sick again, they may enter the second stage of leptospirosis. This form is called icteric syndrome or Weil's disease.
