Tamil Nadu’s Organ Donation Performance
- Tamil Nadu has recorded 240 deceased donors so far this year, nearing last year’s total of 268 donors.
- The State contributed nearly 24% of India’s total deceased donors in 2024.
- In 2024, India recorded 1,128 deceased donors, with 80% coming from five States:
- Tamil Nadu (268)
- Telangana (188)
- Maharashtra (172)
- Karnataka (162)
- Gujarat (119)
- In 2024, Tamil Nadu achieved a record 268 deceased donors, enabling 1,446 organ and tissue transplants.
- The Tamil Nadu government began conferring State honours for deceased organ donors in September 2023, recognising their contribution to saving lives. It is the first-of-its-kind initiative in India.
- Tamil Nadu was the first Indian state to establish an organ sharing registry through TRANSTAN (Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu).
