Tamil Nadu's Organ Donation Performance Tamil Nadu has recorded 240 deceased donors so far this year, nearing last year’s total of 268 donors. The State contributed nearly 24% of India’s total deceased donors in 2024. In 2024, India recorded 1,128 deceased donors, with 80% coming from five States: Tamil Nadu (268) Telangana (188) Maharashtra (172) Karnataka (162) Gujarat (119) In 2024, Tamil Nadu achieved a record 268 deceased donors, enabling 1,446 organ and tissue transplants. The Tamil Nadu government began conferring State honours for deceased organ donors in September 2023, recognising their contribution to saving lives. It is the first-of-its-kind initiative in India. Tamil Nadu was the first Indian state to establish an organ sharing registry through TRANSTAN (Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu).
