International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • Date: December 3.
  • Objective: To recognize services for persons with disabilities.
  • Theme: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

Key Initiatives of the Tamil Nadu Government

  • Award Recognition: The Government of Tamil Nadu encourages this by presenting State Awards.
  • Government Objective: To provide equal rights and equal opportunities to persons with disabilities, enabling them to live with self-respect in society.
  • Tamil Nadu Urimaigal Thittam:  Implemented to provide doorstep assistance based on the principle of ‘Everything for Everyone’.
  • Funding: Implemented with loan assistance from the World Bank.
  • Operation: Integrating services from various departments to ensure that all rehabilitation services are available in the areas where persons with disabilities reside.
  • Livelihood Development: Providing maintenance allowance. Allocation of house sites and houses in urban and rural areas.
  • Power Sharing: Legislative amendments have been made to the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies system.
  • Through this, persons with disabilities are appointed as members in all local bodies through nomination, enabling them to participate in policy-making authority.
