International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Key Initiatives of the Tamil Nadu Government
- Award Recognition: The Government of Tamil Nadu encourages this by presenting State Awards.
- Government Objective: To provide equal rights and equal opportunities to persons with disabilities, enabling them to live with self-respect in society.
- Tamil Nadu Urimaigal Thittam: Implemented to provide doorstep assistance based on the principle of ‘Everything for Everyone’.
- Funding: Implemented with loan assistance from the World Bank.
- Operation: Integrating services from various departments to ensure that all rehabilitation services are available in the areas where persons with disabilities reside.
- Livelihood Development: Providing maintenance allowance. Allocation of house sites and houses in urban and rural areas.
- Power Sharing: Legislative amendments have been made to the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies system.
- Through this, persons with disabilities are appointed as members in all local bodies through nomination, enabling them to participate in policy-making authority.
