Denotified Tribes to Be Counted in Census 2027
- Context: The ministry of social justice and empowerment has recommended to the Registrar General of India to include denotified tribes in the Census exercise, which will be initiated in 2026.
- This will be the first time in Independent India that denotified tribes will be enumerated since 1911.
Denotified Tribes
- Previously classified as “criminal tribes” under the Colonial-era Criminal Tribes Act, 1871.
- The Act was repealed in 1949 after Independence and the tribal communities were “denotified”.
