About the Jnanpith Award

- Established in 1961, this award is presented annually to writers who have excelled in the literature of Indian languages.
- It is conferred upon writers whose works are written in any of the languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, as well as in English.
- The award comprises a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, a citation, and a bronze statue of Goddess Saraswati (Vagdevi).

- This award is presented by the cultural organization Bharatiya Jnanpith.
- The award was first received by G. Sankara Kurup in 1965 for his poetry collection Odakkuzhal.
