Mahavir Jayanti 

  • Mahavir Jayanti 2026 will be observed on 31st March, 2026, commemorating the birth of Lord Mahavir.

Lord Mahavir

    • Lord Mahavir Swami was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama, in present-day Bihar. He belonged to the royal Vardhaman family but chose a very different path, renouncing worldly comforts at the age of 30.
  • After 12 years of rigorous meditation and austerities, he attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience).
    • From that point, he devoted his life to spreading the principles of peace, non-violence, and self-realization.
  • His teachings later became the foundation of Jainism, one of the world’s oldest religions.
  • Even today, his life continues to inspire millions to embrace a path of discipline, simplicity, and spiritual awareness.

Teachings of Mahavir

  • Ahimsa (Non-violence): Refrain from causing harm to any living being.
  • Satya (Truth): Always be truthful in words and actions.
  • Asteya (Non-stealing): Do not take anything that does not belong to you.
  • Brahmacharya (Celibacy): Maintain self-discipline and control over desires.
  • Aparigraha (Non-attachment): Avoid excessive attachment to material possessions.

Current Facts

  • India ranks 7th in global coffee production. Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu account for 96% of India’s coffee production, with Karnataka leading at an estimated 2,80,275 MT (2025-26).
  • As per the findings of the third NFHS (2005-6), which is the closest survey to the 2002 constitutional amendment, in 2005, nine States (Himachal, Punjab, Delhi, Goa, Andhra (incl Telengana), Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu) had achieved a TFR of 2.1 or less. By 2021, most major States had achieved a TFR of 2.1 except five States (Bihar, U.P., Jharkand, Meghalaya and Manipur).
  • Rupee depreciation refers to a fall in the value of the Indian Rupee (INR) relative to major foreign currencies, especially the USD.
  • Devaluation- An intentional reduction in the value of a country’s currency carried out by the government or the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • Depreciation– A decline in a currency’s value that occurs naturally in the market, driven by the forces of demand and supply.
  • The Supreme Court reaffirmed the right to die with dignity under Article 21, allowing withdrawal of life support and emphasising patient autonomy.
