Quaid-e-Millat 

Birth and Early Life

  • Born on June 5, 1896, in Pettai, Tirunelveli district.
  • His original name was Mohamed Ismail.

Role in Freedom Movement

  • Served as a leader in the Congress Party for 16 years (from 1920).

Leadership in Muslim League

  • Became the leader of the Madras Province Muslim League in 1945.

George Joseph 

Early Life and Education

  • Born on June 5, 1887, in Chengannur, Kerala.
  • Studied in Kerala and joined Madras Christian College in 1903.
  • Completed M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh.
  • Studied Law in London (Middle Temple) in 1908.
  • Met many Indian freedom fighters during his stay in London.
  • Returned to India in January 1909.

Fight Against Criminal Tribes Act (CTA)

  • Strongly opposed the Criminal Tribes Act.
    • Worked through courts and newspapers to protect their rights.
    • Helped reduce harsh rules like forced police reporting at night.
  • Earned the title “Rosapoo Durai”.

Labour Movement

  • Helped start the Madurai Labour Union in 1918.
  • Worked for better wages and working conditions for workers.

 Association with Gandhi

    • Met Mahatma Gandhi in 1919 and became his supporter.
    • Hosted Gandhi in Madurai.
    • Organized large public meetings and protests against the Rowlatt Act.
  • Played a key role in Satyagraha and hartals in Madurai.

Journalism and National Role

  • Became editor of Motilal Nehru’s The Independent.
  • Arrested in 1921 for sedition.

Vaikom Satyagraha(1924)

  • Participated in Vaikom movement for Dalit rights.

  • Took part even though Gandhi did not fully support his role.
