Smartphone-Based Earthquake Early Warning System

  • Context: Following the recent earthquake in Venezuela, many Android users reported receiving earthquake alerts on their smartphones moments before the tremors were felt.
  • Both Android and Apple iOS support earthquake and emergency alerts through built-in notification systems.

Android Earthquake Alerts Work

  • Most smartphones are equipped with an accelerometer, a motion sensor used to detect device orientation and movement.
    • The accelerometer can also detect the initial ground shaking caused by an earthquake.
    • It identifies the Primary (P) waves, which travel faster than the more destructive Secondary (S) waves
    • When a phone detects possible earthquake vibrations, it anonymously sends the data to Google’s servers.
    • Google analyses data from multiple nearby devices to:
  • Confirm that an earthquake is occurring.
  • Estimate its location and magnitude.
  • Send early warning alerts to users in affected areas.

Effectiveness of the System

  • According to Google:
    • The system has issued around 790 million earthquake alerts.
    • It has detected and warned users about more than 2,000 potentially dangerous earthquakes since April 2021.
  • The technology provides valuable seconds of advance warning, allowing people to take protective actions before stronger shaking begins.
