Latest inventions in science and technology Smartphone-Based Earthquake Early Warning System Context: Following the recent earthquake in Venezuela, many Android users reported receiving earthquake alerts on their smartphones moments before the tremors were felt. Both Android and Apple iOS support earthquake and emergency alerts through built-in notification systems. Android Earthquake Alerts Work Most smartphones are equipped with an accelerometer, a motion sensor used to detect device orientation and movement. The accelerometer can also detect the initial ground shaking caused by an earthquake. It identifies the Primary (P) waves, which travel faster than the more destructive Secondary (S) waves. When a phone detects possible earthquake vibrations, it anonymously sends the data to Google's servers. Google analyses data from multiple nearby devices to: Confirm that an earthquake is occurring. Estimate its location and magnitude. Send early warning alerts to users in affected areas. Effectiveness of the System According to Google: The system has issued around 790 million earthquake alerts. It has detected and warned users about more than 2,000 potentially dangerous earthquakes since April 2021. The technology provides valuable seconds of advance warning, allowing people to take protective actions before stronger shaking begins.
