About Mangal Pandey

    • Mangal Pandey was a key figure in the 1857 Revolt, the first major uprising against British rule.
  • He is remembered as a hero of the First War of Independence (Sepoy Mutiny of 1857).

Early Life

  • Born on 19 July 1827 near Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Joined the British East India Company Army in 1849.
  • Served as a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry at Barrackpore.

Role in the Revolt

  • Opposed the use of animal fat-coated cartridges as they hurt soldiers’ religious beliefs.
  • His protest became a major cause of the 1857 uprising.
  • The revolt spread across India, with common people also opposing British policies.

Final Events

    • On 29 March 1857, he attacked British officers at Barrackpore.
    • He was arrested and tried by a Court Martial.
  • Hanged on 8 April 1857 at Lal Bagan, Barrackpore.
  • His regiment was later disbanded by the British for showing resistance.
