Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology
- Background: Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, have developed a borophene-based green lubricant formulation using castor oil.
About Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology
Borophene
- Borophene is a 2D nanomaterial composed of boron atoms.
- Due to its high strength and excellent electrical conductivity, it is useful for applications in batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and green lubricants.
- Adding just 0.1 weight percent of borophene to castor oil reduces friction by approximately 42% compared to plain castor oil.
- It disperses uniformly in the oil without requiring chemical modifications and forms a protective tribofilm (friction-reducing layer) containing iron oxides, carbon-based materials, and boron compounds.
- This film reduces friction, enhances load-bearing capacity, and prevents wear.
Significance
- Improves mechanical efficiency, extends equipment lifespan, and reduces energy consumption.
- Supports eco-friendly lubrication technologies.
- Has potential applications in renewable energy, marine systems, sustainable manufacturing, and green technologies.
