Latest inventions in science and technology Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology Background: Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, have developed a borophene-based green lubricant formulation using castor oil. About Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology Borophene Borophene is a 2D nanomaterial composed of boron atoms. Due to its high strength and excellent electrical conductivity, it is useful for applications in batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and green lubricants. Adding just 0.1 weight percent of borophene to castor oil reduces friction by approximately 42% compared to plain castor oil. It disperses uniformly in the oil without requiring chemical modifications and forms a protective tribofilm (friction-reducing layer) containing iron oxides, carbon-based materials, and boron compounds. This film reduces friction, enhances load-bearing capacity, and prevents wear. Significance Improves mechanical efficiency, extends equipment lifespan, and reduces energy consumption. Supports eco-friendly lubrication technologies. Has potential applications in renewable energy, marine systems, sustainable manufacturing, and green technologies.
