  • Context : The Samriddh Gram initiative has been nominated for the WSIS Prizes 2026 under the “Enabling Environment (AL C6)” category.
  • The award recognizes India’s efforts in leveraging digital infrastructure for inclusive rural development.

About the Samriddh Gram Initiative

  • This initiative is implemented by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India.
    • It is built on BharatNet, the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity project.
  • It establishes centres that provide integrated “phygital” (physical + digital) services.
  • It provides access to key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, financial inclusion, and e-commerce.
  • It enables services like telemedicine, smart classrooms, digital governance, and technology-driven agriculture.
  • High-speed broadband, FTTH connectivity, and public Wi-Fi support the delivery of these services.
    • It improves digital literacy, reduces travel time and costs, and enhances livelihood opportunities in rural areas.
    • The model is scalable, sustainable, and based on a community-driven entrepreneurial approach.
  • The first Samriddhi Kendra was inaugurated in Umri village, Madhya Pradesh.

About the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

    • It is a global multi-stakeholder platform established in 2004 to advance digital development and inclusive information societies.
  • WSIS Prizes
  • Launched in 2012, these awards recognize ICT-driven projects that contribute to sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The prizes act as a global mechanism to identify and promote impactful digital initiatives.
  • They honor stakeholders as ‘Winners’ and ‘Champions’ for advancing WSIS Action Lines and the Global Digital Compact.
