Samriddh Gram Initiative Context : The Samriddh Gram initiative has been nominated for the WSIS Prizes 2026 under the “Enabling Environment (AL C6)” category. The award recognizes India’s efforts in leveraging digital infrastructure for inclusive rural development. About the Samriddh Gram Initiative This initiative is implemented by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. It is built on BharatNet, the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity project. It establishes centres that provide integrated "phygital" (physical + digital) services. It provides access to key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, financial inclusion, and e-commerce. It enables services like telemedicine, smart classrooms, digital governance, and technology-driven agriculture. High-speed broadband, FTTH connectivity, and public Wi-Fi support the delivery of these services. It improves digital literacy, reduces travel time and costs, and enhances livelihood opportunities in rural areas. The model is scalable, sustainable, and based on a community-driven entrepreneurial approach. The first Samriddhi Kendra was inaugurated in Umri village, Madhya Pradesh. About the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) It is a global multi-stakeholder platform established in 2004 to advance digital development and inclusive information societies. WSIS Prizes Launched in 2012, these awards recognize ICT-driven projects that contribute to sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The prizes act as a global mechanism to identify and promote impactful digital initiatives. They honor stakeholders as 'Winners' and 'Champions' for advancing WSIS Action Lines and the Global Digital Compact.
