About Ebola
- Ebola is a serious and frequently fatal viral illness caused by a group of viruses called orthoebolaviruses, previously referred to as ebolavirus.
- It is a highly infectious disease that affects both humans and non-human primates such as monkeys and chimpanzees.
- The disease was first detected in 1976 in regions of southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Ebola outbreaks mainly occur in remote areas of Central and West Africa.
- It is classified as a hemorrhagic fever because the virus damages the body’s blood-clotting mechanism, which can result in internal bleeding due to leakage from small blood vessels.
