Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP)
- Context: India is rapidly progressing toward becoming the first country in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to officially recognize 100 coastal villages as “Tsunami Ready.”
- This initiative is part of India’s commitment to the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP).
- The TRRP is implemented by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
- The programme aims to build tsunami-resilient coastal communities through awareness and preparedness.
- In 2020, two villages in Odisha were certified under TRRP, making India the first country in the IOR to receive this recognition; 26 villages in Odisha have since been recognized.
- Global Goal: Under the UN Ocean Decade (2021–2030), UNESCO-IOC aims to make 100% of at-risk coastal communities tsunami-ready by 2030.
- Significance: The programme supports the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) and Sustainable Development Goal-11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
