Physical Geography Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) Context: India is rapidly progressing toward becoming the first country in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to officially recognize 100 coastal villages as “Tsunami Ready.” This initiative is part of India’s commitment to the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP). The TRRP is implemented by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. The programme aims to build tsunami-resilient coastal communities through awareness and preparedness. In 2020, two villages in Odisha were certified under TRRP, making India the first country in the IOR to receive this recognition; 26 villages in Odisha have since been recognized. Global Goal: Under the UN Ocean Decade (2021–2030), UNESCO-IOC aims to make 100% of at-risk coastal communities tsunami-ready by 2030. Significance: The programme supports the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) and Sustainable Development Goal-11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
