  • Adi Shankara Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Adi Shankara, is celebrated on April 21, 2026.
    • Adi Shankara was the foremost philosopher of Advaita Vedanta, emphasizing the oneness of the individual soul (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman).
    • He was born in Kalady, Kerala, to parents Aryamba and Shivaguru.
    • He revived and consolidated Sanatana Dharma through his teachings based on the Vedas and Upanishads.
    • He preached concepts such as the Atman, Paramatman, Vairagya (renunciation), and Moksha (liberation).
  • He established four major Mathas (monasteries) across India
  • Sringeri (Sharada Peetham)
  • Puri (Govardhana Matha)
  • Dwarka (Kalika Matha)
  • Jyotirmath (Badrinath region)

 

World Earth Day 2026

  • World Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 to promote environmental protection and sustainability.
    • It was first observed in the United States in 1970 as a response to the increasing environmental degradation.
  • In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution officially designating April 22 as ‘International Mother Earth Day’.
  • The theme for 2026 is: “Our Power, Our Planet”.
