Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Rules, 2026

  • Background: The Government of India has officially announced the new “Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Rules, 2026” to create an integrated national framework for the online gaming sector.

Key Features

  • The objective is to eliminate fragmented state-level regulations and introduce standardized laws across the country. This is intended to address issues such as gaming addiction, financial fraud, and money laundering.
  • A new body, the ‘Online Gaming Authority of India’ (OGAI), has been constituted under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
  • Data localization has been made mandatory. To prevent prohibited real-money gaming, the framework facilitates the use of financial transaction systems as a tool to promote a legal and formal gaming environment.
