Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Rules, 2026 Background: The Government of India has officially announced the new "Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Rules, 2026" to create an integrated national framework for the online gaming sector. Finalized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), these rules come into effect on May 1, 2026. These serve as guidelines operating under the Act enacted in 2025. Key Features The objective is to eliminate fragmented state-level regulations and introduce standardized laws across the country. This is intended to address issues such as gaming addiction, financial fraud, and money laundering. A new body, the 'Online Gaming Authority of India' (OGAI), has been constituted under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Data localization has been made mandatory.
