About the International Labour Conference (ILC)

  • The International Labour Conference (ILC) is the highest policy-making and deliberative body of the International Labour Organization (ILO). 
  • It convenes every year and brings together tripartite delegations from the ILO’s 187 member countries, along with several observers.

Functions of the International Labour Conference

  • Formulates and adopts international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations.
  • Monitors the implementation of labour standards through its Committee on the Application of Standards.
  • Approves the ILO’s biennial programme and budget and determines the contribution of member countries towards organizational expenses.
  • Elects the members of the Governing Body.
  • Admits new member states that are not part of the United Nations.
  • Examines reports submitted by the Director-General and the Chairperson of the Governing Body.
  • Passes resolutions that guide the ILO’s overall policies and shape its future activities.

Significance

  • India’s participation in the 114th International Labour Conference strengthened international cooperation in labour and employment. 
  • The bilateral meetings reinforced India’s commitment to enhancing partnerships in skills, workforce development, and social security, particularly with countries in Asia and Africa.
