Eligible Manufacturer Importers (EMI) Scheme
- Context: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has rolled out a deferred payment option for Customs duties for qualifying manufacturer importers under the EMI Scheme.
About the EMI Scheme

- Launched by the CBIC as part of the Union Budget 2026–27 announcements.
- The scheme will remain operational from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028.
- Under this framework, eligible manufacturer importers (EMIs) are permitted to release imported consignments without making immediate Customs duty payments.
- Instead, the duty can be paid on a monthly basis in accordance with the Deferred Payment of Import Duty Rules, 2016.
- The initiative is aimed at easing working capital pressures for manufacturers, strengthening tax compliance, supporting domestic production, and improving the overall business environment in India.
