National Institute for Pre-Clinical Research (NIPCR)
- Context : Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has upgraded the ‘National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research’ (NARFBR) and renamed it as the ‘National Institute for Pre-Clinical Research’ (NIPCR).
- It serves as a critical bridge between laboratory discoveries and human clinical trials, validating biomedical innovations.
- The Cabinet Committee approved this institute on November 18, 2015, and it was formally established as a permanent ICMR institute on January 1, 2016.
- It is located in ‘Genome Valley’, Hyderabad. India’s premier biotechnology hub,spanning across 100 acres.
Objectives and Functions
- The primary objective is to strengthen India’s self-reliance in drug discovery and medical technology through advanced pre-clinical research.
- It operates not just as an animal resource facility, but as a comprehensive center for pre-clinical and translational sciences.
- It provides the necessary infrastructure to systematically test drugs, vaccines, biological products, medical devices, and cell & gene therapy methods before they are applied to humans.
- It provides scientific expertise and infrastructure support for biomedical innovation and validation to academic institutions, industries, and start-ups.
