General Science National Institute for Pre-Clinical Research (NIPCR) Context : Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has upgraded the 'National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research' (NARFBR) and renamed it as the 'National Institute for Pre-Clinical Research' (NIPCR). It serves as a critical bridge between laboratory discoveries and human clinical trials, validating biomedical innovations. The Cabinet Committee approved this institute on November 18, 2015, and it was formally established as a permanent ICMR institute on January 1, 2016. It is located in 'Genome Valley', Hyderabad. India's premier biotechnology hub,spanning across 100 acres. Objectives and Functions The primary objective is to strengthen India’s self-reliance in drug discovery and medical technology through advanced pre-clinical research. It operates not just as an animal resource facility, but as a comprehensive center for pre-clinical and translational sciences. It provides the necessary infrastructure to systematically test drugs, vaccines, biological products, medical devices, and cell & gene therapy methods before they are applied to humans. It provides scientific expertise and infrastructure support for biomedical innovation and validation to academic institutions, industries, and start-ups.
