    • Context: A study has found that the world’s first approved malaria vaccine (RTS, S/AS01E) has reduced overall child mortality rates by 13% in certain parts of Africa.
  • Malaria is a life-threatening disease; it is primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of certain infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
  • It does not spread directly from one person to another.

  • This vaccine was recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 for use among children living in sub-Saharan Africa and other regions where the P. falciparum type of malaria is prevalent.
  • The R21/Matrix-M vaccine is the second malaria vaccine to be approved by the World Health Organization, receiving its approval in 2023.
